The humidity control dialogue is a relatively new discourse in the greater food science/environmental/manufacturing debate but a crucial one nonetheless. It requires far more attention and commitment than it is currently receiving from food, health and safety professionals as well as the manufacturing; warehousing; agricultural; and people and farm animal comfort communities at large.

Controlling humidity has huge positive economic spin-offs, from keeping people and farm animals healthy, happy and productive; through to ripening and de-greening post-harvest citrus produce faster with less crop weight losses; maintaining ideal climatic conditions in moisture-sensitive manufacturing industries; to food security via less food spoilage and longer shelf life; and finally, to less meat weight losses in the abattoir and retail butchery space.

Controlling humidity has not been the challenge nor the issue to date, but keeping air moist without excessive moisture and subsequent condensation at high RH levels, is where the humidification control specialists begin to sort the men from the boys!

Sorbite Filters and the Meat Industry

What sorbite filters accomplish in butchery cold rooms:

Removes Acetic Acid
Acetic acid, in the presence of excess moisture, causes sliminess on the surface of lamb, pork and to a lesser extent beef.

Stabilises Relative Humidity
Hot air entering the cold room (during busy work shifts) gives rise to excess moisture, which in turn wets the air in the cold room, which in turn wets the surface of hanging carcasses conversely when cold room doors are kept shut for hours, the evaporator fans dry out the cold room, and the hanging meat shrinks, shrivels and drips blood as a result of having to give up moisture.

Removes Airborne Bacteria
The presence of airborne bacteria in a meat cold room gives rise to mould, yeast and bacterial growth on the walls and ceiling of the cold rooms, as well as on the surface of hanging carcasses. The airborne bacteria is also responsible for the discolouration of the exposed meat surfaces (meat turns dark red colour).

Neutralises Vapour Pressure
When humidity levels (RH) in a cold room fluctuate between periods of excess moisture and periods of dryness (see explanation above), then vapour pressure is created. Vapour pressure in turn exerts a ‘push’ effect when moisture levels are too high and a ‘pull’ effect when conditions become too dry. This results in blood purging from wet-aged meat packaging. As sorbite filters stabilise the RH, the vapour pressure is neutralised and blood purge is greatly reduced.

The above graphs show how the cold room improved in terms of humidity and ambient temperature during the trial and the last reading shows how the cold room returned to its previous condition when the filters were removed. Since the filters had been permanently installed in June 2014, the cold room has remained within the 78% to 90% and below 4°C, viz. every quarter since installation the following are the readings: Sept 2014 RH 79% + 3°C; Dec RH 82% + 2,5°C

Air conditioning of large industrial warehouses, including those which need to operate with open doors and windows, was until now impossible with conventional systems. Today, however, misting systems becomes ideal for cooling large areas (industrial sheds, garages, workshops) or to dissipate high heat emissions from industrial processes (foundries, machinery). Cooling effect can also be combined with humidity control to increase productivity in specific industries (paper, wood, textiles).

Livestock Cooling with Misting

Birds and animals, like humans, are happier and more productive when comfortable. Misting reduces heat stress and increase productivity.

Breeders are more active and produce higher quality eggs. In the hog world, misting increases the farrowing sow’s appetite, which improves milk production. This, in turn, boosts the litter weight at weaning, increases the size of future litters and allows the sow to go back into heat quicker. Cool conditions increase sex drive and sperm count, as well as sexual development.

Mother Nature has an unpleasant way of telling humans and horses to slow down when working in extreme heat, and if those warnings go ignored for too long, disaster can result. But races and heats and rounds and shows are held in all kinds of weather, and if we want our horses to do their best while competing in the heat, then we have to do our best to condition and acclimate them to withstand high temperatures.

Greenhouse Cooling & Humidification with Misting

Misting systems are used with enormous advantages to keep the right climate inside greenhouses of any dimension.

Misting systems are also used with enormous advantages to keep the right temperature and humidity in the environment, under conditions of forced or natural ventilation. In summertime the quick evaporation of the fog will cool the greenhouse due to the principle of evaporative cooling, meanwhile it humidifies the environment in case of low relative humidity. During the wintertime the system keeps the correct humidity rate preventing the dehydration of the crops caused by heating systems. The environment produced by our system is appropriate for the most delicate crops (ex. the growing of young seedlings, the cultivation of tropical plants and in bloom plants) where it is not possible to use traditional spraying methods like standard spraying.

Fog system works on a pressure of 1000 PSI (70 Bar) and it is designed to produce water droplets smaller than 5-10 microns diameter that, for theirs dwarfish size remains suspended in the air for a long time producing the fog effect.

Plants will suffer and typically slow or halt the growing process. In fact, many greenhouses in arid conditions close down for the summer months until ambient temperatures will reduce to an acceptable level.

AC Pre-Cooling with Misting

pre-cooling1Air conditioning systems perform at their worst in hot summer days, just when they are needed the most. The cooling capacity decreases by 14-15% and the power draw increases by 31%. The problem occurs in condensers which have to change vapours refrigerant into liquid forcing the air through the unit and absorbing heat from the refrigerant causing it to condense.

Applying water fogging system to air-cooled chillers can improve the efficiency under most of the working conditions, as the water mist could lower the air temperature entering the condenser.

On typical air-cooled chillers, a reduction in condenser air temperature of 6 °C will result 14% improvement in efficiency and 12°C about 25-30%.
